I just got back from seeing The Hangover a little while ago and I got psyched on doing a review for the new blog piece. The feeling will undoubtedly wane as I continue an effort to try to review every movie I see in the theater on here from now on, or so I’m telling you and myself.
review after the jump
Let me start with a little backstory experience about Zach Galifiankis since he is who most people care about when mentioning this movie. When I played the Bamboozle festival in the sports complex parking lot of Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ accompanied by DJ’s Chauncey and Nick Hook, Zach Galifianakis happened to be playing the same tent and his set was scheduled right before ours. It was pouring rain and there was really nowhere to go because the backstage “area” was literally an area closed off behind a large projector screen, of which there was a man “manning” the projector who kept getting mad if you walked by without ducking. While we were back there waiting, so was Galifianakis, milling around very introvertedly and quiet. I’d say it was understandable as I don’t like talking to people right before I play either. However, in retrospect I have a feeling he was over it before he got there and he had already completed The Hangover so he may have felt that playing for a tent full of teenagers in the pouring rain was slightly beneath him. Call it what you want. Anyway, Chauncey noticed him and immediately recognized him from the Tim and Eric show on Adult Swim. He said he was a funny dude and we watched his set before we went on. I thought he had a totally original sense of humor as he sipped a big cup of beer and ended his set wrapping himself in Christmas lights while ridiculing the fact that he was playing Bamboozle. I ended up following him on Twitter, which he’s since deleted, shortly after this and came to find out that he mentioned going on before me quite a few times. Something along the lines that he got a kick out of the fact he was going on before a dude named Yak Ballz. Go figure…
So The Hangover…
I thought the first half of this movie was one of the funniest movies I’ve seen in a very long time. I was definitely hysterical at certain parts, however, for some reason I didn’t think it held up towards the end. They kind of had to wrap up the story and answer a shitload of questions, which was interesting of course because it held my attention, but I thought it ran out of steam. Problem is, in recent years more than ever I’ve become very perceptive, maybe more than I used to be, of things in movies that remind me or were just blatantly taken from other previous movies so I get annoyed and end up a little bummed. For example of course a couple parts of this reminded me of Old School (I know the same dude directed it) and a few things from Wedding Crashers etc. but to me the original shit in this movie was the best part. I’d say it was pretty dope despite the slow leak but worth a watch and will definitely evoke some healthy laughs. I was actually really surprised that 2 weeks after it came out, the theater was still pretty full on a Thursday night at 10pm. Galiafinakis FTW. Props to Ed Helms who may have been equally as funny. 4/5

so then you can technically say Zach Galifianakis opened up for you…. that’s win.
i was front row for you and galifianakis i saw you and chauncey cracking up
yeah this shit is funny. maybe not gut-busting the whole way, but definitely held my attention. and a mike tyson cameo in 09 is ok in my book. if its not ok in your book you need a new book.
